The Sabbath Day
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
(Exodus 20:8)
When Moses presented this command to keep the sabbath as a holy day, one must have wondered why. Why does God impose a day for mankind to do no work? When Adam sinned, his consequences entailed work as noted, In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. (Gen 3:19 KJV) Yet, when God issued the commandments to Moses, the fourth commandment forbade work on one day, simultaneously relating to Creation, when God created the heavens and earth in six days, and then He rested on the seventh day. This command to respect the seventh day (Saturday) as a day of rest reflects God from the beginning. The Sabbath provided a day of rest for all of Israel, including sons, daughters, servants, and strangers, and even their animals.
Since the Scriptures suggest six days of work are necessary, it is because God has given us the privilege of stewardship. Yet, the Sabbath principle or day of rest teaches us that we are unnecessary for the universe to function. One day of the week, we must realize that God runs the universe without our help.
Therefore, I challenge you to realize that the Sabbath is the best way to learn the truth that we are NOT gods, but Someone else is. So, take your day of rest and realize who is in control.
